Contract Type: Fixed-term contract
Contract Duration: 6 months
Start Date: ASAP

Design Leaders will drive the development of advanced mechatronic systems that power our clients’ next-generation packaging, sorting, and labelling solutions. These mission-critical machines execute complex multi-axis operations with high speed and precision, requiring synchronised control of hundreds of actuators to process items within seconds. Each solution demands seamless integration of mechanical components, electrical drives, pneumatic actuators, electronic circuits, and control software.

Success in this role requires deep multidisciplinary expertise spanning electrical systems, electronics, fluid and solid mechanics, and computer programming. Design Leaders must excel at understanding and defining system functionalities, dynamic behaviours, and interfaces while ensuring the successful integration of all subsystems to meet rigorous specifications.

Central to this role is the implementation of effective product development planning. This systematic approach ensures all functional requirements are fulfilled while maintaining consistency and traceability throughout the mechatronics development lifecycle. Design Leaders orchestrate the necessary steps to develop high-performance components while optimising complete system functionality, ultimately delivering reliable and sustainable automation solutions for Amazon’s operational needs.

Key job responsibilities
• Lead multidisciplinary engineering teams in designing complex mechatronic systems, integrating mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, and control software components
• Create system architecture based on business and technical requirements, ensuring all stakeholder needs are met through detailed subsystem and component requirements
• Drive product development planning and execution, optimising system performance while maintaining overall functionality
• Ensure consistency and traceability throughout the mechatronics development lifecycle, from initial concept to final integration and testing
• Continuously improve processes to enhance efficiency and quality in the development of high-performance automation solutions

Basic qualifications
• Advanced degree (Master’s or Ph.D.) in Mechanical, Electrical, Controls, Mechatronics, or Automation Engineering
• Extensive experience in design and development of industrial automation systems, with specific expertise in packaging, labelling, and sorting machinery
• Demonstrated excellence in technical troubleshooting and innovative problem-solving for complex mechatronic systems
• Proven leadership skills, including the ability to motivate and guide multidisciplinary engineering teams
• Strong communication skills to effectively engage with diverse stakeholders and make sound decisions with limited information
• Proficiency in Agile methodologies and their application in hardware development environments

Preferred qualifications
• Strong project management expertise, with demonstrated ability to plan, execute, monitor, and report on complex technical projects in a VUCA (Volatile, Uncertain, Complex, Ambiguous) environment
• Proven track record in risk management and conflict resolution, with focus on continuous improvement through effective implementation of lessons learned
• Proficient in engineering tools including 3D CAD, requirements management systems, Product Lifecycle Management (PLM), and electrical design software such as EPLAN
