Job description

Our customer requires the services of senior-level HV/MV electrical design managers to oversee and manage the design, development, and delivery of critical power infrastructure across the EMEA region. The contractors will provide design management and supervision services for high and medium voltage substations and grid connections that power AWS data centers. The contractors will not produce design deliverables directly but will manage, coordinate, and supervise design consultants and third-party design teams to deliver compliant, high-quality design packages.

• Manage and supervise the delivery of HV/MV substation electrical designs from concept through construction documentation and commissioning support across multiple EMEA sites.
• Ensure all designs produced by third-party design consultants meet regional codes, utility requirements, and AWS internal standards.
• Enable timely project delivery by managing design consultant teams, reviewing design packages, overseeing technical specifications, and coordinating vendor procurement processes

The contractor shall provide the following design management services:
Design Management & Supervision
• Manage and supervise third-party design consultants producing HV/MV substation designs including single-line diagrams, protection coordination studies, equipment layouts, and cable schedules.
• Review and approve construction-ready drawings (AutoCAD/Revit) for compliance with AWS standards
• Oversee the development of technical specifications and submittal documents for HV/MV equipment (transformers, switchgear, protection relays, busbars, etc.).
• Conduct design reviews using Bluebeam and ensure document control is maintained throughout the project lifecycle
• Ensure design deliverables comply with IEC and local TSO/utility requirements.

Project Coordination & Management
• Lead and coordinate multiple design consultant teams and design workstreams concurrently
• Manage the RFQ/RFP process for equipment procurement, including technical evaluation of vendor proposals.
• Develop and manage project budgets, schedules, and resource plans for assigned design packages.
• Facilitate design coordination meetings with internal stakeholders, external consultants, utility providers, and manufacturers.
• Conduct stage gate reviews at Schematic, Detailed, and Construction Design stages.
Controls & Systems Integration Oversight
• Oversee design input and coordination for EPMS/SCADA/BMS integration with HV/MV systems.
• Review and approve controls hardware and software specifications for substation monitoring and protection systems.
Construction Support & Commissioning Oversight
• Support site selection activities with electrical feasibility assessments and design management input.
• Oversee construction administration including management of RFI responses, submittal reviews, and coordination of site inspections
• Manage commissioning planning and coordinate system validation activities through to energization
Standards & Continuous Improvement
• Research and recommend new designs, technologies, and construction methods for data center power infrastructure.
• Contribute to the development and refinement of AWS internal design standards and templates.
• Provide technical leadership and quality assurance across all managed design workstreams.
Required Qualifications & Experience
Basic:
• Demonstrated experience managing the design or construction administration of electrical distribution systems ranging from low voltage to high voltage.
• Experience in design management of industrial or commercial engineering in mission-critical facilities (data centers, power generation etc).
• Proficiency in reading, interpreting, and reviewing construction drawings, specifications, and submittal documents
• Working knowledge of EPMS/SCADA/BMS controls system software or hardware.
• Proven project management capability including RFQ/RFP processes, selecting and managing engineering teams, reviewing budgets, coordinating multiple consultant teams, and facilitating meetings.
• Proficiency with AutoCAD, Revit, Bluebeam, and MS Office Suite (for review and coordination purposes).
Preferred:
• Chartered Engineer status or Professional Engineering License
• Knowledge of EMEA building codes and electrical regulations (e.g., IEC, EN standards, local utility/TSO requirements).
• Experience managing design concepts through exploration, development, and into deployment or mass production.
• Experience directing and reviewing new designs, technologies, and construction methods for data center equipment and facilities.
• Direct experience in data center design management, construction oversight, operations, or facility maintenance.
